Ameya Mulik, a 28-year-old driver from Mahim, had a miraculous Diwali day escape when he survived without a scratch after his Tata India went off the Panachavati Bridge connecting East and West Vasai and crashed through the railway electric wires and landed more than 80 feet down, at 4 am on Thursday.

Mulik crashed through the bridge railings when he tried to avoid hitting two bikers who had applied the brakes suddenly. Mulik had just dropped employees of a call centre at their residences.

"The two bikers were driving rashly and suddenly they applied brake on the bridge. In order to avoid a collision, I applied break and took a right turn as I lost control and the car went down the bridge and crashed through the Over Head Equipment Wire, snapped it before crashing on the ground near the railway tracks," said a visibly shocked but relieved Ameya Mulik.

The electric wire automatically shuts off once it's snapped. So, again he miraculously escaped being electrocuted. "I am lucky and it is indeed a miracle as I was about to get married in a couple of months to a girl whom I met on a matrimonial website," said Mulik.

Mulik managed to get out of the partially mangled car on his own, He was so amused and incredulous that he started laughing about the incident. When he looked up at the bridge, he realised the magnitude of the miracle that he just emerged from.

" At first I could not believe what had happened as I had to pinch myself to confirm that I had met with an accident as it was just like a nightmare. When I realised what I actually had been through I laughed to myself and then called up the police", said Mulik.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) from Vasai arrested Mulik for causing damage to Railway property, though he had not done it deliberately. But this is the normal bureaucratic procedure.

"The accident led to damage of OHE wire as he landed directly on it and fortunately he was alone in the car. We are investigating about the incident, said Indrajyot Chettiar of the RPF. For Mulik, however, there couldn't have been a better Diwali, for he almost came back from the dead.
