It's unbelievable but true. The Mumbai University's (MU) general administration department (GAD) is facing a dilemma. They are reluctant to take action against Shashikant Khanvilkar, driver of Dr Naresh Chandra, the pro-vice chancellor (Pro -VC) of MU, who has been occupying a flat meant for the teachers.

The residential building in Kalina Campus of MU for class IV employees was in a dilapidated condition. The university decided to renovate the building five years back and all staff residing there were relocated in other buildings temporarily.

Due to unavailability of alternate flats of class IV employee, three drivers namely Shashikant Khanvilkar, Tukaram Kadam and Misal were temporarily relocated in flats of class III employees. This building is exclusively meant for University teachers. The MU class IV employee flats consist of one room kitchen whereas teachers flats consists of two bed room hall kitchen.

The class IV employees building is repaired almost three years back. However, Khanvilkar is yet to vacate the flat meant for teachers. All the occupants were repatriated to their original flats including the other two drivers. It is a known fact that Pro-VC is well aware of the situation, but has been turning a blind eye.

The driver, often arrogant and abusive, threatens the GAD staff of complaining to Pro-VC when asked to vacate.

MU staff union has given a memorandum to MU management and demanded same flat should be given to other class IV employees too.

Attempts to contact Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro - VC, MU at his Fort campus office and Kalina Campus office were futile.

Dr MA Khan, registrar of MU, says, "I have asked for a file of the concerned driver and his entitlement. Once file arrives, I will take a look at it, and as per stipulated rules, a decision would be taken. Even staff union representative have apprised me on the issue, so appropriate decision would be taken soon."
