Mankhurd police arrested the driver and cleaner of a tempo that allegedly ran over a 13-year-old boy early on Thursday morning in Mandala area while it was being reversed. The rear wheel of the truck crushed the head of the boy who was sleeping on the road.

The accused, realising what had happened, shifted the body to a nearby nullah and fled the spot.

The deceased, Nasir Rehmatullah Shaikh, 13, used to stay along with his parents and two siblings in a nearby hutment. The arrested are Mohammed Rafique Kamal Khan, 21, the driver, and Aslam Khan.

"The tempo had come to dump scrap at a nearby godown. Shaikh was sleeping on the road. Driver Khan without realising Shaikh's presence, reversed the vehicle and Shaikh's head was crushed. When the two realised someone had been killed, they initially panicked, then packed Shaikh's body in a carpet-like cloth and dumped it at a nearby nullah," said Vilas Kanade, senior police inspector, Mankhurd station.

Locals who found the body, alerted Shaikh's parents and the police. Shaikh was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, but was declared dead-before-admission.

Police first suspected it to be a case of murder, but on observing the nature of the injuries, inferred it had been caused by a vehicle.

"Investigations revealed Shaikh had died in an accident. Acting on information, we arrested Khan and Aslam," said Kanade.

The two have been booked for causing death due to negligence and destruction of evidence under IPC.
