The end of last month saw six lives being saved, with the city witnessing 2015's first double cadaver donation.

How was it made possible?
The Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) said in 24 hours families of two brain-dead patients gave the go-ahead for their kin's organs to be donated and the surgeries took place on January 31.
The retrieval of organs took place in Lilavati Hospital and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH), where the two donors were admitted.

Who are the recipients?
"We got four kidneys and two livers from the two donors," said an officer at ZTCC. The four kidneys went to end-stage kidney ailment patients at Lilavati, KDAH, Jaslok and Bombay hospitals each, the livers went to end-stage liver disease patients at Global and Jupiter hospitals.

How's 2015 been so far, donation-wise?
ZTCC said this is the fifth cadaver donation of 2015. Speaking about the rise in cadaver donations in Mumbai and its plan for the future, ZTCC general secretary Dr Sujata Patwardhan said, "One positive move is that small hospitals are now calling us for help to check on suspected brain-dead patients. In last one month, we have got 6-7 such calls. Though the calls have not materialised into cadaver donations, we are positive."

What was the scene last year?
After seeing a rough patch the last few years, Mumbai made a history with 100% rise in cadaver donation in 2014. Doctors are now hoping that this year more such donations take place, surpassing 2014's figures.

Private vs public
While private hospitals are diligently contributing to cadaver donations, public hospitals have been lagging behind. This year, no cadaver donation has happened from a public hospital yet.
To find out why public hospitals are behind, the state health department has set up an expert committee.
