In view of numerous untoward incidents in the previous years, City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has appealed to Navi Mumbaikars not to go to the Kharghar hills for a picnic during this monsoon.
The main road for going to the hills was blocked by the town planning agency a couple of years ago. They have also deployed security guards to prevent people from entering the danger zone. In spite of that, several people from various parts of the satellite city go there during monsoon through other routes.
"Various accidents have taken place while climbing the hills in the last five to six years. Taking those incidents into consideration, we had blocked the road a couple of years ago. Still several people go there risking their lives. We appeal to the residents not to go for a picnic there during this monsoon," said Mohan Ninawe, chief public relations officer of Cidco.
"There is one village near the hills and only residents of that village are allowed to enter through the main road. If any outsider wants to go there for other purposes, he or she will have to take our permission beforehand," he added.
The planning agency is thinking to turn the entire area of Kharghar hills into an idyllic nature park, complete with hiking paths and biking trails. A massive afforestation drive is afoot in the area by Cidco and the state forest department to create a nature park for the satellite city.
"Kharghar hills are one of the most beautiful places in Navi Mumbai. It is true that monsoon is the best time to visit the area. However, several people fall while climbing the hills and finally meet with fatal ends. A few of them have also gone missing at the hills and have never been traced. Apart from this, the fear of landslide is always there. Therefore, people should not visit this area during monsoon," said a Rajesh Patil, a resident.
