Members of right wing organisations on Friday stated they do not deny members of the Hindu community being involved in terror activities.

They were speaking during a press conference — organised by Sanatan Sanstha at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh — held to slam "hypocritical progressive elements". The conference was also chaired by Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad, and Hindu Janjagruti Samiti.

Members of the group demanded that the government should have some reformist policies in place so that they the youth, who are in jail, are reformed and do not end up forming "bigger groups".

"We only say that Samir Gaikwad is innocent and that Sanatan Sanstha is being targetted. We never said that members of the Hindu community could not be involved in terror attacks," said advocate Sanjiv Punalekar, member of Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad. The organisation is also likely to fight the case for Gaikwad.

He added: "There could be people in the (Hindu) community who felt injustice being done upon them and reacted in the manner they did."

In the same breath, Punalekar gave an instance where some people are not thrashed by the police, while some are beaten mercilessly in the custody.

Sighting a case, Punalekar stated that MLC Kapil Patil and documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan were not thrashed by the police as was the case with others. "In such cases some people might feel that there were being victimised," said Punalekar.

To this comment, Patwardhan — who was present at the press conference — started an argument. "There are some people who condemn us but do not ask for a ban when Raza Academy runs riot and some people participate in Yakub Memon's funeral," said Abhay Vartak, spokesperson of the Sanstha.

The speakers also stated that veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare could have been shot due to some personal enmity. "We have also given some leads to them and have asked the chief minister to conduct a fair probe," said Punalekar.
