The second-year students of DKVC junior college and MKMP senior college in Dombivli on Tuesday protested over what they call arbitrary fee hike. The students have alleged that the college has hiked their fees by over 50%.

The management, however, said that there was some confusion and that the students would be spoken to.

Over 100 students of bachelor of accounts and finance of DKVC college staged a protest outside the campus. They refused to attend classes till the management addressed their issue. "The fee in our first year was Rs17,000 and now it has been hiked to Rs24,000. This is too much as other colleges in the vicinity are offering the same course for a lesser amount," said a student on the condition of anonymity.

The students also claimed that they talked to the principal and head of the departments on the issue and they were advised to speak to trustee Shankarlal Patel. "Either they rollback the fee hike or we take our leaving certificates and leave the college," the student said adding, "But Patel told us to bring our parents and take our leaving certificates. He said that they have hiked the fee as they share it with the university."

When contacted, Patel said there was some misunderstanding among the students. "The course fee is Rs17,000 for the first year, Rs20,000 for second and Rs24,000 for the third. We have hiked the fee by only 10 % as this is an unaided college and we need to pay salaries," said Patel.

"I tried explaining to a batch of students today. I will again meet those who protested and explain it to them," added Patel.
