Documentary series on democracy to be screened in Mumbai

Mumbai-based independent film group, Root Reel, has put together series of documentary film screenings called the Democracy Trilogy, a set of three thought-provoking films that touch the nerve of various social issues of the nation

The Democracy Trilogy will feature award-winning films by renowned documentary filmmaker Sanjay Kak that focus on the working of India democracy. Over the period of next three months, films that explore sensitive and pertinent issues of India will be showcased free of cost along with post film discussions with social activists.

Starting with 'Words on water' that was shown on August 27, the initiative aims to break down one social topic per month for their audience. The first film traced the people's movement against large dams in the Narmada Valley, emphasising on the sustained non-violent resistance. The screening was followed by an interactive session with social worker Vijaya Chauhan who has been a part of Narmada Bachao Andolan since the inception of the movement 28 years ago.

The series will be continued with the screening of 'Jashn-e-Azadi' on September 24 which deals with the issues of Kashmir post independence and questions of democracy and freedom in the stated. This will be followed with interactions with journalist Dilnaz Boga.

The series will conclude with the screening of 'Red ant dream' on October 29 that chronicles stories of resistance from Bastar, Odisha, Punjab and those who live by the revolutionary ideas in India.

To be hosted at the Alliance Franciase Auditorium in south Mumbai, the films are open to all and free of cost. “Our work with Root Reel focuses on promoting culture, social and political issues through various media, and we frequently conduct film screenings that we believe will help raise the level of awareness on pressing issues,” explains Nitesh Mohanty, co-founder of the Root Reel.
