On Wednesday morning, 30-year-old carpenter Avdesh Choudhary got ready for another day's work. Little did he know that by the end of the day, he would be in the hospital with a sharp chip of wood cutting into his right cheek.

Choudhary, a resident of Dombivli, was chopping wood when he suddenly felt a sharp object flying out and slicing through his cheek. He rushed to a local doctor but they failed to find anything unusual. By that time, he was in excruciating pain and running high fever. He was then referred to KEM Hospital.

Dr Neelam Sathe, associate professor, ENT department of KEM Hospital, said, "Choudhary came to us on Wednesday with severe pain in his right cheek and fever with chills. Through the naked eye, it was tough to find the presence of a foreign body in the cheek. We decided to do an X-Ray and CT scan," said Dr Sathe.

Doctors were surprised to find a long wire-like object lodged in the cheek area. "We decided to take him for surgery. We had to open up the cheek area and search for the object," said Dr Sathe.

During the search, a team of doctors found a 7 cm-long wire lodged in an S-shape inside the cheek. "It was a rusted wire. We took almost an hour to take out the wire," said Dr Sathe.

Choudhary is still in hospital and on antibiotics. "He still has fever. It will take another few days before we decide on when to discharge him," said Dr Sathe.
