If doctors attached to civic-run medical colleges have their way, it will be difficult for those professors, who are above 58, to get administrative posts. The doctors have demanded time-bound promotions.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had recently proposed to raise the age of retirement of medical teacher from 62 to 65, a move that has drawn severe criticism from the Medical Teachers’ Association (MTA), which represents staff from the BMC-run medical colleges – Sion, KEM and Nair.

Dr Rajesh Dere, president of MTA said, “Four years back, we were promised by the authorities that there would be time-bound promotions and after 58, medical teachers won’t be given any administrative posts. This was a solution to administration’s decision to increase the retirement age to 62.”

Dr Dere said that though they have no objection to raising the retirement age to 65 as long as junior medical teachers get a chance for growth. “Presently, an assistant professor or associate professor gets promotion after 10-12 years unlike state-run medical colleges. This isn’t fair.”

On Tuesday, MTA representatives met mayor Snehal Ambekar who has assured that the proposal would not be tabled in the general body meeting till the administration hears them.

The representatives met Dr Suhasini Nagda, director of major civic hospitals in BMC on Wednesday. “The meeting was fruitful. She has asked us to compile data on how many medical teachers are awaiting promotions and for how many years they have not got promotion. We hope that the administration accepts our demands,” said Dr Dere.

According to MTA officials, there are 70% of lecturers and associate professors who are presently waiting for promotions for past several years.

Sources said MTA members plan to go on mass casual leave and sit on a hunger strike if their demands are not met.

“We had discussed the demands on MTA wanting time bound promotions and necessity to fill vacant posts and the administration is looking into the demands,” said Dr Nagda.
