The suburban Mumbai district consumer dispute redressal forum has penalised a doctor and a hospital for alleged negligent treatment of a patient, resulting to death. The forum asked the doctor to pay a compensation of Rs 9 lakh to the family of the deceased as a compensatory amount, along with Rs 20,000 towards their litigation charges.

The case dates back to 2006, when Laila Dadarkar, a resident of Borivali, was taken to Arihant Heart Clinic in Borivali, after she had collapsed in the afternoon of August 5, 2006. Dr Parag Ajmera had treated her. However after the treatment, her health deteriorated and an MRI scan revealed injury in the brain.

According to the complainant, the previous doctor had administered an excess dosage of sodium and had not stopped even when the levels had normalised. This negligence eventually resulted in her death.

When the consumer forum asked the doctor to file his reply, he claimed it was done to malign him. However, the forum found the truth and penalised him.
