The body of Dr Deepak Amarapurkar, 58, a reputed gastroenterologist of Bombay Hospital feared to have fallen into an open manhole while wading through waist-deep water at Elphinstone on Tuesday, was found in a drain in Worli on Thursday morning.

Dr Rashmi Karandikar, DCP, spokesperson for Mumbai Police confirmed the incident and said, "We identified his body through his watch and sent the body for postmortem that revealed that the death took place due to drowning. A case of accidental death has been registered at Dadar police station. The investigation is on."

His last rites were performed by his older sister Manisha at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar on Thursday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Dr Anjali, a senior pathologist, and his son Rohan and daughter Pooja who are studying abroad and will return to the city on Friday.

Amarapurkar's relatives and colleagues from the medical fraternity said the lackadaisical approach of civic authorities had claimed his life and demanded strict action against those responsible.

On Tuesday afternoon, when heavy rains were battering the city, Amarapurkar left Bombay Hospital for his Prabhadevi residence. He went missing after he stepped out of his car at Deepak Cinema near Elphinstone flyover and began walking towards his home. Eyewitnesses had informed the police that they saw a man falling into a manhole left open to flush out rain water, prompting a search operation for the doctor. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had to temporarily suspend search operations after it got dark on Wednesday evening, and resumed it on Thursday morning.

Dr Shivkumar Utture, member of the central working committee of the Indian Medical Association, said, "We have conducted a meeting with doctors and have planned to write to the government and demand justice for Dr Amrapurkar. The person responsible for the death should be punished. It is a big loss to the medical fraternity."

The incident also triggered an outpouring of grief and anger on social media.
