Records with Maharashtra's transport department shows that there are as many as 2.35 crore vehicles in Maharashtra.
A total of 20.87 lakh of these were registered in Maharashtra in the last fiscal year of 2013-2014, that is an average of 17.40 vehicles getting into the record books every month. A sizeable chunk were two-wheelers at 15.56 lakh, while the balance 5.31 lakh was a combination of cars, trucks, buses, trailers, etc.
This means a whopping number of 2,32,75,582 vehicles have been registered in Maharashtra. Once again majority of them are two-wheelers like scooter, motorcycle and moped at 1,70,13,473.
"Obviously, not each and every vehicle registered and mentioned in our records will be there on roads. Hundreds of them must have been discarded by way of scrap, people transferring vehicle to other states, sale of vehicle to a person in some other state, vehicles finishing their life cycle, etc," said VN More, transport commissioner of Maharashtra.
For the authorities, it is impossible to keep a track of data of how many of the vehicles have gone off the roads. As per the court ruling, heavy vehicles are scrapped after 15 years.
Due to economy being sluggish, the automobile industry has taken a hit or else there would have been even more wheels on the roads.
