As per the timeline set by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), within the next five years Mumbai will get it's another metro line — 33.5km-long Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ underground metro.
Passenger operations for underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro will commence in a phased manner starting from December 2018 and the entire route will be ready for public only by April 2020.
As per the timeline set by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), within the next five years Mumbai will get it's another metro line — 33.5km-long Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ underground metro.
"If chief minister Devendra Fadnavis decides to have car depot for underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro line at Kanjurmarg, it would mean that the entire route would be commissioned in four phases or else there would be three phases of commencing passenger operations," said a state official.
These four phases are Kanjurmarg-SEEPZ scheduled to be ready by December 2018, followed by SEEPZ-Bandra Kurla Complex in June 2019, Bandra Kurla Complex-Science Museum (Worli) in December 2019 and then the last stretch of south Mumbai which is Science Museum-Colaba by April 2020.
"These targets can be achieved only if there aren't any delays in executing all the required works to complete the construction activity followed by delivery and installation of telecommunication, signalling, electrical, rolling stock, among others," added the official.
"Once a certain number of rakes or trains arrive trials can commence from depot side followed by partially commissioning of route in a phased manner from the depot end of the metro corridor," shared a state official.
Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ being an underground metro and SEEPZ-Kanjurmarg an elevated one there would be interchange at SEEPZ for people to switch metro.
At the moment, Colaba to SEEPZ line has an estimated cost of Rs23,136 crore, if the route is extended to have a depot at Kanjurmarg there will be increase in project's price tag. The MMRC is yet to award bids for the civil construction of the underground metro. The entire construction work has been divided into seven packages.
