A state-government panel Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban Mission (VNSSM) Chairman and prominent agriculture activist Kishore Tiwari will hold a special session for Shiv Sena legislators on Wednesday on the shortcomings in the functioning of insurance companies in the implementation of the crop insurance scheme. He will also talk extensively on how the much-debated Rs 32,000 crore crop loan waiver scheme has failed to meet its desired objectives in the state.

Tiwari's interaction will take place three days after Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray warned the insurance companies of party workers' wrath if they fail to pay the farmers' dues at earliest. Shiv Sena hopes that the brainstorming session will help party legislators to reach out to the distressed farmers and provide them much-needed relief. Besides, Thackeray had said that his party would ensure that every deserving farmer gets the benefits of a complete loan waiver.

Speaking to DNA, Tiwari said, "There is a need to amend the existing crop insurance schemes as its implementation should take place at the village level. Damage assessments conducted by the local Gram Sabha would benefit the genuinely distressed sections of farmers." As far as crop loan waiver is concerned, he said many farmers, who were denied the loan waiver scheme benefit on technical grounds, should get the benefit.

During his interaction with Sena legislators, Tiwari will bring up the issue of no clarity on the loan waiver scheme. "There is a huge confusion among farmers over the scheme. They were asked to submit various unnecessary documents for fresh crop loan. They are fed up with the process," he said.

Incidentally, Thackeray has asked the party workers to be vigilant and pursue implementation of crop loan waiver and insurance schemes diligently. He had pointed out that the lax attitude of a few officers might be giving a wrong impression about the government.

His message to the party workers was to take the lead to resolve issues faced by the farmers.
