Vakola police have registered a case against Anu Baba, a self-proclaimed reputed godman from Vakola area of Santacruz, for allegedly practising black magic and duping devotees.

The accused, identified as Chandrashekhar Pujari alias Anu Baba, would call himself the human incarnation of goddess Mahakali and would accept hefty donations with the promise of fulfilling wishes of his devotees.

A complaint against Pujari was filed by a bizman, Virendra Pandey (53) with Vakola police. In his complaint, he alleged that Pujari and his family took complete charge of the administration of Mahakali temple situated at Ruiwala Road in Santacruz east, and would draw in devotees with the promise of offering spiritual remedy for their problems.

As per the police records, Chandrashekhar's father Giriya who used to run a Paan shop chose to become an ascetic and live a spiritual life in his later years. Following his father's footsteps, Chandrashekhar too left his tailoring business and became an aghori priest. Gradually, Pujari became famous and the line of devotees outside Mahakali temple on Tuesdays and Saturdays started getting longer. Chickens were sacrificed to 'please the deity and solve problems', said the police.

"I was convinced that there is no such miracle. So, I approached the Vakola police in September 2018, but no one paid any heed. Then, I wrote to senior police officers including Assistant Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police, Commissioner of Police and even the Chief Minister. Once again my complaints fell on deaf ears. It was then I knocked the doors of the magistrate court and submitted all the evidence against Anu Baba," said Pandey.

On June 26, the court issued an order to the Vakola police to register an FIR and initiate the probe.

"Anu Baba has been booked under Section 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of The Maharashtra Prevention Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act. The amount of money that has been misappropriated in the name of donations and alms is yet to be ascertained. No arrests have been made so far," said a police officer.
