Subways beneath the rail tracks - that take people from east to west - are severely hit during rains. The WR along with BMC is auditing these subways as part of their project to check road and foot over bridges.

Damaged subways not only lead to waterlogging, causing problems to motorists but also affect pedestrians as water from tracks leaks and drips on people walking on the footpaths and roads below.

One such case was seen on Sunday after local trains were shut for 45minutes when rumours started coming in that there was soil erosion at Khar subway. However, it turned out that flakes from subway’s ceiling was giving way. The case is similar with other subways in Mumbai too.

For instance, at Poisar subway, the road is narrow and in a very poor condition. There are potholes on road. At Malad, the subway is broad however the ceiling needs improvement. There is moss seen similar to the one at Khar.

The water above drips continuously while the walls are moist due to the seepage. The Andheri subway is better when it comes to its maintenance. The railways have put up metal plates - that are painted red and yellow - covered from the top. It is preventing water from seeping in.

The situation at Khar subway is worse as whenever train passes the flakes keep dropping from the dilapidated ceiling. In April 2016, former Union Railway minister Suresh Prabhu had asked both Western Railway and BMC to repair Khar subway.

Senior official from Western Railway said that the civic body was to take up the repair work but it was postponed.

“We didn’t find any problem with Khar subway. Now as part of the audit of road and foot over bridges, we are also auditing subways,” said a WR official. A plan of Rs 10 crore was also made for the repairs.

PLAN OF ACTION

  • The engineers from Railways, IIT Bombay and BMC are going to conduct a safety audit of three bridges on Tuesday

  • The team will inspect Dadar, Carol and Elphinstone Road bridges. This is part of the ongoing audit of bridges after the collapse at Andheri

  • A plan of Rs 10 crore was made for the repair work to be undertaken
