From Nanachowk to Tardeo and further down to Heera Panna, one may not spot potholes but that is not to say the ride is not bumpy. In fact, the road is uneven right next to the D ward office, sudden bumps on the surface make commute an annoyance here.

“During monsoons, I do not think it will be any different. This road has been under repairs for years now. Every time they are doing one stretch or another and still the road work is not complete. Whenever I have tried to point it out, they say concretisation is going on. It is a good thing that they are concretising the roads, but in the process, the road is in shambles,” said Dr Nilesh Baxi, a resident of Tardeo who frequently uses the stretch of roads.

Baxi points at several stretches close to SoBo Central, Tardeo AC Market and close to D Ward office, where the road is uneven and poorly connected. There are drains that are not fixed properly, roads have been scraped in patches for tarring to be done at a later date, and then there is manholes that are a risk with or without monsoon.

“This stretch seems to have most number of manholes. There are manholes in the middle of the road which are no smaller than a large pothole, because their outer circle is not aligned with the road level. For a motorist, it is worse. During monsoons, how will a rider know that the manhole cover is set deep within the road? I have not seen anyone clean the drains this time. And when they did before, they left the silt by the road which went right back into the drains. It seems a bit late for the authority to start desilting,” said Baxi.

He said that round-the-year repairs affect the residents’ health. “Bumpy rides generate back problems. I have been getting a lot of plaints about dust and pollution from the constant work,” said Baxi, who is also a general physician and operates a clinic in the area.

Vishwas Mote, assistant municipal commissioner of D ward, said, “The road is under construction and that is why it looks shabby. The concerned executive engineer, roads department, has give the assurance that the work  will be completed by June 4. Regarding the bumps and evenness, we are bound to maintain quality. Concerns about the road will be forwarded to the executive engineer who will take care of the issue.”
