Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar inspected desilting work that is underway in major nullahs of the western suburbs on Wednesday. However, what was supposed to be the first citizen's assessment of rain work soon turned political. The Mayor said that if Mumbai faces flooding this monsoon, metro work will be responsible for it.

Many storm water drains and sewerage lines have been damaged by haphazard work carried by the state-run MMRDA, he pointed. BMC's work, he assured, will be over before the rains hit the city, while admitting the civic body needs to speed up.

BJP group leader Manoj Kotak responded to this with: "Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is capable of looking at ongoing metro works. They Mayor is siding with corrupt officials and contractors who are not desilting properly. He has no right to comment about metro work."

Kotak added that before claiming that Metro work will cause waterlogging, "The mayor should see that nullahs are widened and all the pumping stations are operational."
