Hundred of people living in dilapidated buildings in Kurla, which comes under the L ward (Kurla, Saki Naka) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will be homeless during the holy month of Ramzan. While the civic administration has given them a weeks time to vacate their buildings, they want at least a month's time to look for an alternate accommodation.

The BMC issued a list of dilapidated buildings on Thursday, the day the Ramzan began. Of this list, most of the dangerous buildings (106) were found to be located in the L ward.

Several building in Balaji Mandir Marg and Pipe Road in Kurla (west) have also been listed as dangerous. The L ward office has put up a notice in the building premises and asked the residents to vacate it by May 25. They mentioned, they would cut water and electricity supply of those who fail to do so.

Zaki Mansion, located along Balaji Marg in Kurla West, is among the most dangerous buildings under L ward and the residents — around 13 tenants — have been asked to vacate it.

According to the residents, they do not know how they will arrange for an alternate place to reside within a week. "We do not want to live in this dangerous building. But, we have no other option," said Sameer Ansari, one of the residents of the building. He added that they have been living there for almost forty years, after getting it on rent under the Pagdi system. Now, the owner is not willing to go for redevelopment despite repeated notices issued by the BMC.

Nidhi Chaudhary, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (special), said that the civic body has requested all the tenants to vacate these building, as residing there during monsoons would amount to putting their lives at stake. "We have given them a weeks time to vacate and shift to a safe place," she said. However, she also accepts that due to the tussle between tenants and owner, the redevelopment of such buildings become an issue.

Similarly, other buildings like Chopadekar Chawl and Shri Ram Bhawan in Balaji Marg, Kale Building in Sarweshwar Mandir Marg in Kurla West, face similar problems, wherein the owners refuse to redevelop the buildings.
