The University of Mumbai has yet again failed to secure a spot in the list of top 500 universities in the recently declared QS rankings, again raising questions about the reputation of one of the oldest universities in the world. Over the last few years, the university has been in news for various problems - delays in results, initiatives that never see the light of day and poor grievance redressal mechanism among many others.

Despite all the criticism that comes its way, not much seems to have improved. To begin with, each Vice Chancellor comes with new set of ideas to make the university ‘better’ than what it was in the tenure of the earlier ones. By the time the students and faculty members are accustomed to the changes, it is time for a new VC to take charge.

Inefficient functioning of some of the major departments like the examination department has contributed to the increasing woes of students time and again. Even after a dozen scams and numerous delays and glitches, the department lacks accountability owing to several factors like lack of a permanent controller of examinations, vacant positions and temporary staff.

Despite its failure in addressing the existing issues, the university VC now plans to set up a campus in Dubai and USA. It is high time that the university does some real critical thinking to make the future of thousand of students better who are currently left in a lurch due to its perpetual neglect and apathy.
