The students of Fr C Rodrigues College of Engineering at Vashi, who had not been permitted to appear for their seventh semester viva and practicals till Nov 10 as they had not cleared the backlog, have been told by the college that they can now appear for it.

It was after dna published the story in its Nov 11 edition that these students were called by their department heads to appear for viva.

Despite of the Bombay high court interim ruling on Oct 27 that engineering students who had failed in more than five subjects in BE third year as well as earlier semesters should be allowed to appear for their seventh semester viva and practicals, which began on Oct 27 in Mumbai University (MU), Fr Rodrigues College of Engineering had refused to allow their students to appear for viva and practicals.

Ram Sharma (name changed) one of the engineering students, said: "We got a call from our department heads saying we could attend the viva. They have kept three viva in a day, which is good for us. That will help us to finish our viva soon."

Neeta Naik (name changed), another student, said: "When they called us to appear for viva, they said they had got the Mumbai University circular late."

HC ruling today
It was a student, Krutika Sakhare, who had moved the court against the MU ordinance of 2013, which makes it mandatory for engineering students to appear for their fourth year exams as per the new syllabus.
On Thursday (Nov 13) the Bombay high court will give its ruling on whether these students can be allowed to write their seventh semester theory exams as well.
