Days after dna reported how a cadaver donor was made to wait for hours and a recipient had to return home disappointed, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) has set up a committee to investigate the matter.

The committee will be headed by Dr SK Mathur, a liver transplant surgeon who is also the vice-president of the ZTCC. Both Hinduja as well as Jupiter hospital have been summoned by the ZTCC for further investigation.

On March 4, dna had reported on a cadaver donation that fell through in Hinduja Hospital in Mahim after the family withdrew their consent to donate liver of their brain dead kin. As per sources at the ZTCC and hospital, the reason behind withdrawing the consent was the delay in organ retrieval.

The family had agreed to donate kidneys and liver of the person. While kidneys were retrieved, the logistical delay in deciding which hospital's patient should get the liver frustrated the donor family who called off their decision.

The mess led to a 53-year-old farmer from Nashik returning home disappointed after leaving for Thane hoping for a cadaver donor and liver transplant. The farmer had reached Igatpuri when he got a call from Jupiter Hospital informing that the cadaver donor family is no longer keen on donating liver.

Dr Sujata Patwardhan, general secretary, ZTCC said, "The ZTCC's executive committee met on Friday to discuss the issue. We have set a committee headed by Dr Mathur who will investigate the case. Both Hinduja Hospital and Jupiter Hospital will be called and asked to present their side of the story after which the committee will decide on what corrective measures need to be taken so that such incidents are not repeated in future."

According to sources at ZTCC, the hospitals have already submitted their explanation and now their representatives will have to dispose before the committee.

What happened on March 3?
A 37-year-old man was admitted to Hinduja Hospital after he suffered brain haemorrhage and declared brain dead on March 2 afternoon. The second confirmatory test for brain dead was done at 4.30 pm as per the rule book and ZTCC was informed. As per the ZTCC waiting list, the patient from Hinduja Hospital was suppose to get the liver. However, there was no decision taken from the hospital till 10.15 pm. Once the hospital decided that they don't have a patient to receive the liver, Jaslok Hospital and Fortis Hospital were informed. Since their patients too had some or the other problem, the next in the waiting list was the farmer from Nashik who was registered under Jupiter Hospital name in ZTCC list. Frustrated by the delay in organ retrieval, donor family withdrew their consent and the farmer was informed about the same.
