Following dna's report on the poor state of three of Mumbai's flyovers, the authorities have assured that repair works would be taken up before monsoon hits the city.

Speaking to dna, S Ramchandani, joint managing director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), said, "Work on the Dattapada flyover on Western Express Highway in Borivli will begin and will be done soon." Any work on Sion flyover needs permission from Mumbai traffic police but attempts will be made to take it up prior to this monsoon, he added.

dna on Tuesday had reported how three of the city's 60 flyovers are in a bad shape and need structural repairs.

When repeated attempts were made to check why repairs were not done properly earlier, Jayant Mhaiskar, managing director of Mumbai Entry Points (the toll collection agency that is supposed to maintain the flyovers), did not respond.

"Repair was carried out on the 27-year-old Aurora or King's Circle flyover earlier, but the expansion joint has come off once again. Since it has been brought to our notice, we will get the repairs done before the rainy season starts. Heavy traffic on this bridge is one of the prime reasons behind us not being able to get adequate window to properly carry out repair work," said an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's bridge department.

Another official having technical know-how of bridges said that although these elevated roads are designed and made to serve at least for hundred years, the structures become maintenance heavy after a couple of decades.
The Kemp's Corner flyover, which completed 50 years in March this year and is Mumbai's first flyover, also needs more funds for its upkeep.
