A day after dna carried a report on how lack of campus and funds had led to a deadlock in the official launch of Maharashtra's first National Law University, the state government has passed an order allotting a two-storey building in the premises of state-run Ismail Yusuf College at Jogeshwari for the purpose.

The order, dated January 17, accessed by dna, states that a "stack building" in Ismail Yusuf College has been allotted for starting NLU, Mumbai from 2015-16. Though the order does not mention from when or how long, it states that NLU can function from the premises till it gets its own building.

A highly placed official in chief minister's office (CMO) said: "CM, who is himself a lawyer, took cognizance of the newspaper report and directed the higher and technical education department to take immediate steps to allot a building for MNLU. Allocation of funds is also on cards."

An official said: "Since CM and higher and technical education minister Vinod Tawde were leaving for Davos and London, respectively, this week, the file for allotment was moved on the fast-track and the order passed on Saturday."

The two-storey building, which is lying unused, has nine classrooms and a couple of halls, which will now be modified into a library, faculty rooms and common room for students, said the official.

Prof Bhavani Prasad Panda, who got the copy of the order on Monday, expressed happiness. "Now I am trying to put things in order. Our first objective is to hold an admission test for 2015-16 along with the Delhi National Law University."

In its January 16 edition, dna had exposed how the bureaucrats around the chief minister were harassing ace academician and vice chancellor of the university, Prof Bhavani Prasad Panda, who had been seeking an audience with Fadnavis since December.

The lethargic approach of the government and bureaucratic hurdles were quite unusual especially as the Fadnavis-led government has been reiterating its commitment to removing hurdles to fast-track the decision making process.

Prof Panda has been seeking audience with Fadnavis since early December to apprise him of situation – lack of place and funds – to start the prestigious university. He however had failed to get through the bureaucracy surrounding the CM. Prof Panda was handpicked by none other than the chief justice of India, who is also the chancellor of the university. He took over the reign of the first VC of the first NLU of Maharashtra on October 10, but since the assembly elections were on, nothing had moved till the new government took charge in November.
