Leader of opposition in the legislative council Dhananjay Munde on Thursday questioned how the state government can provide security to a known international cricket bookie, Anil Jaisinghani, just before the cricket World Cup.

What brought the issue to the House?
Without mentioning dna, Munde, during the discussion on the law and order situation in the state, said an English daily has exposed the fact that Jaisinghani is using police protection to increase his clout. Munde added that the bookie has many cases against him and is using police machinery for raiding the rival bookies.

What had dna reported?
dna had published reports about Jaisinghani availing police protection on the eve of the ICC Cricket World Cup.
dna had earlier published that in 2010 the question was raised in the state legislative assembly by none other than Devendra Fadnavis, who is the current chief minister, and in the council by BJP's Ranjit Patil, which had led an embarrassed RR Patil (the late former home minister) to withdraw the protection given to Jaisinghani.

Who had first questioned govt on bookie?
BJP MLA Narendra Pawar had written a letter to the government, which stated, "Jaisinghani, who cumulatively enjoyed police protection under the earlier regime for 11 years, owes the home department over Rs38 lakh in fees. How can he get protection again when he hasn't paid up for before?"

What did the oppn say?
Munde questioned why the government had ignored Pawar's letter, demanding an explanation. The discussion on law and order situation could not be completed on Thursday and its reply could come in the House after the discussion gets over in the Upper House on Friday.

Who is Jaisinghani?
Under scanner by the ICC watchdog Anti-Corruption and Security Unit and arrested for betting in Ulhasnagar in 2002, in Raipur in 2005 and in Mumbai in 2009 under the Gambling and Telegraph Act, Jaisinghani, as claimed by him, is a businessman. However, the Thane police website lists him as a history-sheeter.
