The Central Railway (CR) officials have received a green signal to repair the dangerous Kopri bridge from the Thane traffic department.

As per the CR officials, they had written an application for the same to the traffic department for the permission and had also asked for their cooperation to ease the traffic over the bridge when the work begins. dna had also reported about the Kopri bride's precarious conditions on April 30.

After the letter was submitted, the traffic department officials said they wanted the repair work to be done as soon a possible. "It is a sensitive part and the work should be done before monsoon hits the city. We received the letter and we have also asked them to go ahead with the repair work. We will provide all the help required from our end. It will also benefit the pedestrians," said an official on the condition of anonymity.

R Karandikar, deputy commissioner of police, (traffic) said, "We have given them a month's time and they should provide us wardens as we will not shut down the road entirely.

S Waghela, a resident of the area, said, "We wanted the bridge to be repaired earlier, but better late than never. We are glad to know that the repairs will be undertaken soon."

He added that the bridge's debris have been noticed falling on the passing trains and it would be a boon to instal iron barricades too.

"The road should be closed completely to ensure that the work is not interrupted. If they keep the road accessible then it will lead to traffic snarls," said Waghela, adding that the work will be appreciated only if it is completed under the given deadline and also, the repair should be of good quality.

The traffic department has said they will try to ease the traffic, however, as the bridge connects to the Eastern Express highway, it will be difficult for them to close the road entirely.

A traffic police officer said, "We understand the urgency and the bridge is in dire need of repair. We have kept the repair work on priority. We discussed the matter with the CR officials and we will extend our cooperation. We will divert the traffic on the road and also put up signage for the drivers. The railway officials will work on the side of the footpath edge, but both the sides – the road and the tracks – need to be protected while the repairs are on."

"The railway wardens will have to ensure that there are no accidents. We understand the urgency of the repair," added Karandikar.

N Patil, chief PRO of CR said, "We have received the permission and we will start the work in the next few days after discussing on important points within the department with our officials."
