Jayesh Shah's animal hospital that provides free medical treatment to stray dogs and birds has received the love of dna readers by way of much-needed donations for expansion of the facility. dna had first featured Shah's initiative in its July 6 edition.

After the story was published, Shah, who has transformed his office-cum-godown in Masjid Bunder into an animal hospital – HELP Animals & Birds – received several calls from people who praised his selfless effort and offered him donations.

"A gentleman was very touched by the story and came forward to donate money. He has already deposited Rs25,000 in the donation account of the hospital. A few others have also promised to donate soon. Looking at the response from people, I am elated and my determination to carry forward my work has got a push," said Shah.

Prashant Sarkar, director of a private firm, donated Rs25,000 to Shah's HELP Animals & Birds Association. In an email, Sarkar wished the money to be used for general as well as medical purposes.

Out of his love for stray dogs and the guilt of losing one of his own, Shah transformed his 1,000sqft office into the animal hospital, which is equipped with an operation theatre, an OPD and a shelter for stray dogs. The hospital has a capacity to provide free accommodation to 40 stray dogs in separate kennels.

As the hospital is self-funded and is not affiliated to any other institution or municipality, it is in need for donations to meet its monthly expenses. "People can also help by adopting strays from the hospital so that there are more open kennels for more strays coming in every day," said Shah.

Dedicated sterilisation centre for stray cats

More donations would help Shah set up a sterilisation centre for stray cats. "Currently, there is no dedicated centre for sterilisation of stray cats in Mumbai. The state government has Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres, but those are only for stray dogs. I want to open a dedicated sterilisation centre for stray cats inside the animal hospital in the next couple of months," said a determined Shah.
