In a major victory for the citizens-led clean-up movement of Versova beach, BMC has not only agreed to provide more 'machinery' for better cleaning, but has also initiated the process for drafting of a comprehensive tender for the beach cleaning as a long-term measure.

dna on June 27 had reported about Versova Residents Volunteers (VRV) who have been cleaning the beach for 40 weeks writing to the civic body seeking more machinery as well as issuing of a new tender with additional stringent clauses after they reviewed the existing tenders and found it "woefully inadequate" and "contractor- friendly."

On Friday, along with Andheri MLA Ameet Satam, members of VRV met assistant municipal commissioner, K/West ward Parag Masurkar for a detail discussion on the beach clean-up issue after which it was decided that the K/West ward will send a detailed proposal for additional requirements.

"We explained that the issue at Versova is that the plastic and other trash over a period of time has been embedded under the sand up to one meter depth and now with monsoon the trash piling up, and the problem is only going to increase," said Versova resident and Bombay High Court lawyer Afroz Shah, founder of VRV.

Shah informed that BMC has now agreed to provide one JCB, five dumpers per shift, two tractors for transporting the waste as well as one tractor with ploughing arrangement that will help remove all the trash and plastic stuck deep in the sand.

"I have assured VRV members of full support and hence we met BMC officials. We have to ensure that the beach cleaning standards are improved and hence we are asking BMC to make necessary changes in the tenders," shared Satam adding that he will keep following this issue with BMC to ensure the machinery is allocated at priority.

Proposal sent to solid waste dept

Parag Masurkar, assistant municipal commissioner K/West ward said that they have already sent the proposal to deputy municipal commissioner Solid Waste Management. "We are hopeful that we will get these machinery in the next 15 days. We also had discussion on the need to draft a comprehensive tender as a long-term measure as the existing tender only includes manual cleaning, which is not enough," he said.
