The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started adopting corrective measures for the upkeep of Swami Vivekanand Sarovar, popularly known as Bandra Talao, since Monday morning. The prompt action follows dna's report published on Monday on how the upkeep of the heritage pond has been ignored by the civic body, resulting in locals misusing it and worsening its condition.

The H-west ward has also sought police help to deal with local miscreants indulging in illegal activities there.

Civic activist and chairperson of Perry Road Residents Association, on Monday, wrote to the ward office, seeking immediate attention for Bandra Talao. Assistant commissioner of H-west Sharad Ughade has already started the maintenance work and instructed the contractor to increase security at the spot and ensure that no illegal activities are allowed. Ughade has assured that the difference will be seen in the coming days.

Bandra residents are continuing to garner support for the Talao to ensure that the 200-year-old pond, which is a Grade II heritage site, is restored to its full glory and maintained. Anil Joseph said all ALMs and civic activists have resolved to join hands for the betterment of the area's natural beauty.

"A joint inspection of the pond was done on Monday; the remaining work has been taken up by the contractor. We have decided to put grilles around the waterbody to curb the practice of illegal fishing. We have also sought help of the police to deal with local miscreants who threaten the security staff," said Ughade.

He added that apart from cleaning the amphitheatre area, they have ensured that no one is allowed to feed pigeons at the spot. "In the next two-three days, we will issue notices to all shops around the pond selling grains for the pigeons. Clean-up marshals will be posted at the Talao to keep an eye on those feeding pigeons or spoiling the pond and surrounding area," said Ughade, assuring that all the garbage, debris and filth has been removed and cleaning work has been done.

He also said that the water will be kept clean by operating fountains at intervals. "Phase two of the beautification will be implemented shortly," said Ughade.
