A 40-year-old woman was rescued on Wednesday from a Nalasopara apartment after being locked in there for the past one year. She was imprisoned allegedly by her husband and his relatives as they suspected her to be possessed by a ghost. During the course of her confinement, the woman lost her eyes due to malnutrition, and became weak due to loss of water. When the doctors rushed to help her, she kept asking for water to drink as she was unable to even stand.

Durgavati Mishra, 40, was kept confined in the first floor flat of the Sai Deep Apartment in the Gala Nagar area of Nalasopara East while her husband Jayprakash resided on the second-floor flat of the same building with his sister-in-law, Induvati. The duo had locked Durgavati inside the flat and never bothered to check her condition; she became weak after they stopped giving her food and water.

The unbearable stench coming from the flat alerted the neighbours to the fact that something was amiss. Yet they were afraid to inform the police. But when social workers from the locality learnt about the incident, they rescued the woman from the apartment. They then informed the 108 emergency helpline number and the Tulinj police station.

"She was normal and has two minor sons. But she used to remain inside the apartment which was locked from outside. Her husband suspected that she was possessed by a ghost, and he never visited the first floor flat. He lived with his sister-in-law," said Neha Tiwari, neighbor.

"For the past year, the family neglected her. She was often assaulted by her husband. He never bothered to give feed her. She remained inside, and she would urinate and excrete in her clothes, as she lost the strength to walk due to weakness," said Tiwari.

"When we entered the flat to rescue her, she could not respond and was unable to even walk. A foul smell was emanating from the house. Her sister-in-law gave vague answers to our questions, so we informed the police, broke open the lock. Doctors rushed her to the hospital for treatment," said Alpesh Rupani, a local social worker.

"The woman has become weak, and she has lost her eyes due to loss of water. The retinas in her eyes have been completely damaged. If the woman had not been rescued, she would have died in the next few days. She is in this condition because of her family. We have found assault marks on her body, and are rushing her to JJ hospital for treatment," said Dr Sarveshvar Dube, who works with the 108 Emergency Helpline.

Assistant Inspector Dilip Landge from Tulinj police station said, "The husband is working in Andheri. We have asked him to come to the police station. We will take legal action against him," said Landge.
