In a stark irony of sorts, 85-year-old Dharma Patil had to commit suicide to get 9 times the compensation for his five-acre land in Dhule, which the state government had acquired for a solar project. Dharma Patil's family will now get Rs 54.48 lakh compensation as opposed to the earlier 6 lakh that was offered to him when he was alive. The government had acquired land from 12 other farmers for the same project. Compensation for them will also be revisited.

"Once we get approval from the concerned state department, we will release the sanctioned amount to Dharma Patil's family as per the revised formula. Besides, there are 12 other farmers who had complained about lower compensations. The documents of these farmers will also be revisited and justice will be done," said senior government official, requesting anonymity.

The compensations will be awarded according to the MGNREGA formula. "The deceased Dharma Patil will get Rs 28 lakh, while his son Narendra Patil Rs 26.42 lakh as compensation for their total five-acre land. In the revised estimate proposal, we are also giving compensation for their mango plants, plus 100% ex-gratia," said a source in the Dhule collectorate. DNA is in possession of the revised compensation documents.

Opposition has slammed the BJP government and has termed the whole issue as unfortunate. "This is unfortunate. It shows that there is no value for human life in BJP government," said former Congress Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. The Opposition plans to raise the issue in the upcoming State Assembly sessions.

Meanwhile, Dharma Patil's relatives have denied accepting the compensation. "If their neighbour, farmer Padamsingh Girase, a relative of tourism minister Jaikumar Rawal, has received Rs 1.89 crore for one acre of land, then why Patil will settle for mere Rs 54 lakh for their five acres."
