The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Agency (MMRDA) will soon sign MoUs with Milan Metro, Milan Municipal Corporation, Singapore Land Transport Authority, Singapore Mass Rapid Transit, Mass Transit Railway Hong Kong and Transport for London for knowledge sharing and technical expertise for the timely implementation and functioning of a slew of transport infrastructure projects. Currently, a number of projects including monorail, Metro rail, sea link, airports, transit oriented development and multi-modal integration of over Rs 2 lakh crore are under various stages of implementation in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) covering 4,355 sq km.

The population in the MMR is expected to surge to 32 million by 2041 from 22 million as per the 2011 census. ''MMRDA board chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at its meeting held on February 27 gave an approval for signing MoUs to share expertise in urban development, transport, logistics, manufacturing and establish a framework for cooperation to further trade and investment relations,'' said the MMRDA board member on a condition of anonymity. He told DNA, "MMRDA and agencies from Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and London will exchange expertise and data pertaining to integrated ticketing system, city traffic management, congestion pricing, development of rope ways and high speed Maglev trains.''

Another board member said that the MoU will be quite timely when Fadnavis has been aggressively pursuing the integrated ticketing system in Greater Mumbai whereby commuter can travel on one ticket in BEST bus, suburban railways and mono and metro railways.

As far as MoU with Singapore is concerned, MMRDA will work in the areas of urban infrastructure, aviation and industrial cooperation. "Singapore will share it's expertise on urban infrastructure and development. They will cooperate in master planning of mixed use development, housing, water, energy efficiency and transport in MMR, Pune and Nagpur metropolitan regions. Efforts will also be made for direct air connections between Singapore and from proposed greenfield international airport at Pune," he added.

MMRDA hopes to use expertise of Transport for London (TfL) in the operation and maintenance of Metro railways. Incidentally, Transport for London has responsibility for sharing London's network of principal road routes, for various rail networks including the underground, overground, Docklands Light Railway and TFL Rail.

The Master Plan

  • MMRDA and agencies from Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and London will exchange expertise and data pertaining to integrated ticketing system, city traffic management, congestion pricing, development of rope ways and high speed Maglev trains
  • Singapore will share it’s expertise on urban infrastructure and development. They will cooperate in planning of housing, water, energy efficiency and transport.
