First, he was detained by the police and looked at as the prime suspect after his wife had gone missing and was presumed dead. Now, he has lost his job and plans to divorce his wife. Within a fortnight, life has taken quite a turn for 49-year-old Sanjay Punewar, husband of Alka, a small-time Marathi actress.

On December 27, 2013, Thane resident Alka had faked her car accident and death to elope with her 24-year-old paramour to Chennai.

Sanjay, a former Indian Air Force (IAF) officer, was planning to start a new career with a private company in Navi Mumbai. “I had got a very good job offer. The company even gave me an offer letter and asked me join from January 1. But now, due to this incident, it has put my employment on hold,” he lamented.

“I have no words to describe the agony I have gone through, and for no fault of mine,” Sanjay told dna in an exclusive chat.

He said he and Alka have now decided to file for mutual divorce to end their 20-year-old marriage.
“We are filing a divorce petition in court on Monday,” he added.

Leading a typical middle-class life till December 27, Sanjay has suddenly found himself in the middle of a life-altering controversy. “After my wife went missing, she was presumed dead because her car was found but she was untraceable. The police looked at me as the prime suspect and interrogated me like I was some criminal,” he said.

“It has also been a difficult time for my two sons. One is out of town on a college assignment, but he keeps inquiring about his mother. I have assured him that she is fine and he should first complete his assignment and only then come back,” Sanjay said. “And I am counselling my other son about what has happened and how we have to handle it.”

“I have been accused of having an extra-marital affair, but these allegations are totally baseless. I have never cheated on my wife,” he added.

Sanjay got married to Alka in 1993. He was an engineer with the IAF. After a few years, he left the IAF and joined a private airline.

Talking about the loss of the new job, Sanjay said, “I have to look for another and take care of my two sons to ensure they are not affected by this unfortunate incident.”
