Narendra Patil, son of 84-year-old late Dhule farmer Dharma Patil who committed suicide early this year in the state secretariat today climbed a mobile tower in Dhule and threatened to commit suicide if the government did not give additional compensation and initiate action against the revenue department officers for lapses during land acquisition. The Maharashtra government has already compensated Dharma Patil's family and paid them Rs.50 lakh as a compensation. However, Narendra demanded that additional rupees 6 lakh to be paid as compensation as money paid earlier was not enough.

It is notable that Dharma Patil had succumbed after consumption of poison in Mantralaya on January 22 this year demanding higher compensation for five acres of his land acquired by MahaGenco. Dharma Patil had received a paltry Rs 5 lakh as a compensation.

Today, following Narendra Patil's suicide threat, Maharashtra government and state power generation company (MahaGenco) stepped in and decided to pay additional compensation worth Rs 6 lakh to him for his land acquired for the solar power project.

The death of Dharma Patil had rocked both the houses of the legislature. Thereafter, the energy department hiked the compensation which Narendra declined to accept. However, the government's efforts to convince him paid off as Narendra subsequently accepted the compensation of Rs 50 lakh paid in February by MahaGenco.

This was followed by the government's decision to appoint a one-man committee of retired principal judge Shyam Darne to study compensation paid to other farmers in the area, whether changes were made in official records and recommend disciplinary action against erring officials. The committee had observed that the revenue department should have strictly followed the land acquisition process and calculated compensation.

Narendra was adamant and wanted immediate government decision. Hectic telephone conversations among the Dhule district collector, the state revenue department officer and the MahaGenco officers took place to find a way out.

State energy department officer told DNA,''After due consideration the decision was taken to pay extra compensation of the order of Rs 6 lakh to Narendra. In addition to this, he was assured that stern action will be taken against the concerned revenue department officers completing the land acquisition in haste.'' Thereafter, Narendra called off his stir and got down from the mobile tower.
