The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has decided November 15 as the date to partially open the Kapurbawdi flyover in Thane.
“Motorists coming from Mumbai and going towards Ghodbunder road will be able to use one of its arms starting from November 15,” said an MSRDC official.
The work on this 767-metre-long flyover had begun in February 2010, and after long delays is now nearing completion.
According to the official, this bridge will be opened in three phases. First phase on November 15, second, in December 2013, that is the lane from Balkhumb towards Mumbai and the third and final phase Ghodbunder to Mumbai lanes in April 2014.
The construction cost of this elevated road has shot up from Rs166 crore at the tendering stage to the current Rs197 crore.
This is the fourth and last flyover that was planned on the arterial Ghodbunder Road. The first three that have been opened are Manpada, Patlipada and Waghbil flyovers.
In the last few years, Thane’s Ghodbunder Road has witnessed a sudden spurt in development and population, resulting in the need for flyovers.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to create a separate road for heavy vehicles to reduce the rate of accidents. But this segregation of traffic plan will not take off anytime soon as the state environment department has put the proposal on hold. The proposal will destroy mangrove, thereby affecting the environment.
Bridging the gap
