dna exclusive: 7,500 UPSC aspirants still await SIAC results

Around 7,500 students who gave their State Institute for Administrative Careers (SIAC) common entrance test in November last year are still waiting for the results of the exam. SIAC's delay in declaring the latest CET results has worried students, who in August this year will face their UPSC preliminary exams.

WHAT DOES SIAC DO?
The SIAC is a Maharashtra government-run institute for the specific purpose of helping students to prepare for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations.

WHY ARE ITS CET RESULTS DELAYED?
Recently, the state government had declared that Marathas and Muslims would get reservations in educational institutions, as these communities were backward, socially and economically. This is being challenged in the Bombay high court. Until the HC decides the case, SIAC cannot declare its results, as they may change as per the court ruling.

WHAT IS THE POSSIBLE IMPACT OF THE DELAY?
A cascading effect of the delay in the declaration of SIAC-CET results is that students who appeared for the entrance test but may not be selected by SIAC, may lose admission to other institutions that give training for civil services exams. The results of five such institutions in the state are also being withheld, a SIAC official said.

The students have expressed their grievance to education minister Vinod Tawde.

Shashi Naik (name changed), one of the candidates who appeared for SIAC-CET, said, “In the first place there are hardly 110 seats in this institute. If they delay the declaration of the results, the students who are not selected will find it difficult to get admission in other institutes. How will we complete our training then?”

SIAC provides training for 11 months. If a student then passes the UPSC prelims, she continues to take coaching for the main UPSC exams from the SIAC.

WHAT IS SIAC SAYING?
SIAC officials on condition of anonymity said: “The parents and students are constantly calling us to enquire about the results. But we have already put up the notice on the website that the institute is waiting for the guidance from the state government as there is a stay by the high court on economically socially backward category (ESBC). The result may be declared either in two days or one more week depending on when authorities notify us of the final decision.”
