The dna eco-Ganesha team on Monday undertook an initiative — Cleanliness is next to godliness — as part of which it conducted a clean-up drive at Juhu beach. The team helped Juhu Angels, an NGO.

Even though more people opted for eco-friendly idols this year, city beaches were not a pretty sight after the Visarjan day, wilted flower garlands, coconut shells, festoons, plastic cups and sweet offerings made by the devotees strewn about.

The clean-up drive, which started around 6am and went on for three hours, saw over 500 volunteers from schools, colleges and the corporate world taking part. All volunteers were provided with safety gear, gloves and masks, along with garbage bags.

"I am happy that people are getting more and more educated towards cleanliness of the society and are making effort to keep at least their surroundings clean," said Larson Fernandes, who handles Juhu Angels.

"This initiative was taken up by dna, in association with us, to help the BMC clear all the garbage after immersion of idols."

Actor Jay Bhanushali, who participated in the clean-up drive, said, "It is a great initiative, the BMC has done great work and all of us gathered here are helping them. I am happy that I could be of assistance. I would say that there shouldn't be any need to organise such campaigns and that the citizens should themselves take the initiative to keep our environment clean."

"I am excited that we have come here for such a great cause. It is high time everyone became aware of the fact that if you litter you have to clean it and not just ignore it, polluting the area," said Yashvi, a volunteer from NM college.

Assistant municipal commissioner (K ward) Parag Masurkar said, "Our cleaning staff have done a great job and we received valuable help from the volunteers. Everything went smoothly. I would like to thank all the citizens for their cooperation."
