Gone are the days when students looked forward to vacations as just a break from school. They are no longer spending it just by playing in the backyard or heading out of town. Now, children are using their vacation to gain some extra skills or prepare for their activities in schools.

Shreya Mondkar, a resident of Thane, has enrolled herself for a robotics workshop, where she is not only learning engineering skills but also creating innovative things.

As part of the workshop, Mondkar has created a talking lantern. “All through the year, students are so busy with their academics that there is hardly any time for developing creative passions,” said Sucheta Mondkar, Shreya’s mother. Shreya is also preparing herself for a project to participate in Destination Imagination, an international competition.

At Bandra’s jogger’s park, children are preparing themselves for the sports day that will come after their Diwali vacation. The park conducts a free athletics workshop where they train children. “We have over 50 children who have enrolled with our camp. We train them in everything from running to jogging and exercises which are part of their school sports day,” said Frank Saros, manager of the jogger’s park.

However, children are not only looking to better their skills but are also making an effort to give back to society. Nine-year-old Prabhadevi resident Varun Nagpal, along with his friends, often conducts fairs to raise funds to buy gifts for Toy Bank, an NGO which distributes toys to children.
“Children’s Day is round the corner and the kids will definitely participate in Toy Bank’s events around that time,” said Varun’s mother, Veena Nagpal.

Academicians too see this as a positive trend. “Such workshops are a way for children to identify their talents. Parents should make sure that they do not force their kids into too many hobby classes,” said Sailee Mantri, head of the pre-primary section of Nalanda Public School, Mulund.
