It was a Diwali gift for two suspended policemen. Inspector Dilip Mangaonkar and constable Ashok Valekar of Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station in Kurla (West) were reinstated by the Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh on November 9 and posted to Local Arms (LA).

The two were suspended on April 9 by the then Mumbai police commissioner Arun Patnaik for allegedly molesting and outraging the modesty of a probationary woman sub-inspector posted in the same police station. The VB Nagar police station registered a case under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (house trespass), 451 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.

Patnaik ordered the crime branch to conduct an investigation into the case.

Before suspending the two, Mangaonkar and Valekar were transferred to Central control room and main control room respectively.

The woman sub-inspector was shifted to Nehru Nagar police station in Kurla (East).

In her complaint to the police commissioner in March, the woman policeman alleged that Mangonkar used to send lewd SMS and pass sexual comments against her.

He used to tell her that she looked like actress Isha Koppikar and that she should join the modelling world.

He had molested and sexually harassed her several times since January.

She lodged a complaint against two with the police commissioner in March. The then police commissioner Arup Patnaik directed a woman deputy commissioner of police to conduct an thorough inquiry into the allegation.

Accordingly, after an inquiry, DCP Harvindar Kaur Varaich submitted the report last week to Patnaik. Based on the report, the two had been suspended.
