The Bombay High Court on Friday asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to place on record by July 20, steps it has taken to create awareness about garbage segregation at household levels.

A division bench of Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur and Justice NM Jamdar said, “Housewives and maids are not aware of the concept of segregation at source, it needs to be addressed at the earliest.”

Counsel Anil Sakhare, appearing for the BMC, informed the court that the corporation has installed blue and green dustbins in the city to promote segregation of wet and dry waste.

Sakhare said that the corporation has stopped open collection vans and have added compactors to avoid garbage spilling over.

The court also asked the corporation to look at measures to be adopted to solve the problem of dumping at Kanjur Marg dumping ground and find new sites for the same. It also asked the civic body to study ways adopted by corporations in other states and countries.
