Disaster management: BJP, Sena come together for event

Shiv Sena leaders stayed away from attending Mumbai BJP leader Ashish Shelar’s function on World Environment Day in Bandra. BJP leaders, likewise, did not attend the Mayor’s award for best teacher.

Breaking from the recent trend of leaders from either the BJP or the Shiv Sena inaugurating projects on their own, with leaders of the other party choosing to keep away, on Monday both Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray were present at the inauguration function of the newly set up Disaster Management Cell of the BMC. Thackeray said that in the coming days many more inaugurations would be held ahead of the civic elections.

“We will inaugurate all our projects which were in pipeline and are now ready to be rolled out. Let others criticise that we are doing inaugurations just ahead of elections. But why shouldn’t we talk about it when we have strived to get everything in place all this time”, said Thackeray while inaugurating the upgraded Disaster Management Cell at the civic headquarters.

Until early this month leaders of both the saffron alliance parties were avoiding attending the programmes arranged by the other. Last week Thackeray inaugurated a Sewage Treatment Plant at Colaba. While the Chief Minister was invited, no BJP leader attended the programme. In September, Shiv Sena kept away from the inauguration of swimming pool in Dahisar. The Chief Minister attended the function despite the Mayor having termed it illegal and having written to the CM to skip the inauguration.

In June, Thackeray chose to stay away from the smart city programme attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP city leadership stayed away from the inauguration of Britannia pumping Station. Last week, the Mayor had to write to Fadnavis listing out four projects that needed to be inaugurated in the days to come, and had sought his availability for the same. Gundavali–Kapurbawdi– Bhandup Complex water tunnel, conservation and beautification of Powai Lake and the Vihar water treatment plant are among those projects that need to be inaugurated jointly by them,
