The old tenements in Girgaum are resorting to the old ways of advertising and promoting local service providers.

A local association of residents has decided to put together a directory that would list the contact details of small businesses, merchants and service providers.

Aamhi Girgaonkar had, a few months ago, distributed more than 2 lakh pamphlets of more than 24 businesses that are run by the youth in the south Mumbai locality. It was done to help local businesses flourish. Looking at the response it generated, the group decided to expand the database.

It has asked local businessmen, including servicemen such as electricians, plumbers and others, to list their contact details. These details will be compiled and published as a directory, which will be circulated in the area for free.

"If someone in South Mumbai wants to buy pickle, then they should known that it is available from a chawl in Girgaum. An electrician is available in the next lane. All the facilities are right here. We do not want the local business to suffer, or for people who are not local to the area to take advantage of our ignorance and flourish," said Garuav Sagwekar of Aamhi Girgaonkar. The well-to-do locals are donating money so the book can be readied.

"We have got some 140 names and numbers and are hoping for 250 more. We will print the book in the next few months. We are doing it with the money we received in donations," said Sagwekar. "We have told people they can buy us printing paper as well."
