In order to temporarily end travel woes of motorists traveling to and from the western suburbs, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will open the central lane of south bound Dindoshi flyover on Monday.

“The panel work on the damaged portion is over. On Saturday and Sunday we will carry out bitumen laying work. We plan to open the flyover for motorists on Monday,” said an MSRDC engineer.

If the weather is favourable and if it is possible to finish the job before Monday, the partially shut bridge may even open on the weekend, he added.

From October 1, the day major cracks and structural damage came to light on this south bound bridge, the authorities had kept the middle lane shut for repairs apart and did not allow two wheelers and heavy vehicles to use the flyover. Even after all the three lanes are made operational, only light vehicles will be allowed to ply.

On October 8, the entire south bound Dindoshi flyover was shut for repairs creating massive traffic jams on the Western Express Highway. The situation will most likely be repeated in the future when the authorities will take up repair work of the set of cracks that have been spotted on the bridge.

Nine of the 19 segments of the bridge need to be either repaired or replaced. This is shocking given the bridge is only 13-years-old and bridges are made with a lifespan of at least 50 years.

MSRDC officials are tight lipped about the reasons behind damages. Engineers in other agencies say the damages could be due to use of sub-standard raw material or lack of maintainance.
