Decks have been cleared to repair the south-bound Dindoshi flyover. Once the work begins it will be shut for almost to a month. However, the date for starting the repair work to the structural damage is yet to be finalised.

On Tuesday, managing director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) Anil Diggikar cleared the plan to repair the bridge.

"Nine slabs need to be repaired. The estimated cost for the repair work is Rs56 lakh," said Diggikar.

The authorities are awaiting clearance from Mumbai Traffic Police to shut the flyover for motorists.

As per an Indian Institute of Technology Bombay report, some portions of the flyover has shown inadequate concrete strength. The report reads: "It's not possible to pinpoint any specific reason for the crack in the slabs, however, their nature appears to be primarily structural and due to bending of the slabs. The possible reasons may be due to fatigue, overloading and the curved shape of the bridge in the plan and elevation."

A total of nine slabs have to be replaced to make the flyover structurally sound. Some of them need to be repaired by injecting grouting and carbon fibre laminates in the cracks. This will enhance carrying capacity of the slabs.

On October 1, 2013, cracks on the bridge had forced the authorities to partially shut the flyover. On October 8, the entire south-bound carriageway was kept shut for motorists resulting in traffic snarls.

Along with giving permission to repair the structure, the traffic police department will also put up an advisory to Mumbaikars to take public transport vehicles as it will help in reducing traffic jam at the Goregaon stretch of the Western Express Highway.

This 13-year-old Dindoshi flyover, also called as Goregaon-Mulund Link Road Junction flyover, was constructed between April 13, 1998 and April 12, 1999 by New Delhi-based VRM Global Infrastructure for Rs11.5 crore. The defect liability period for the contractor is for five years, which has expired.
