The Dindoshi sessions court on Friday rejected the bail plea of two doctors from LH Hiranandani Hospital who are allegedly involved in the kidney racket case. The doctors can be arrested now, if they do not move to a higher court for anticipatory bail.

Doctors Veena Shewlikar, a general surgeon, and Suvin Shetty, a consulting pathologist, on Thursday had moved for anticipatory bail at Dindoshi court.

Additional public prosecutor Satish More, while seeking cancellation of bail for Shewlikar and Shetty, told the court that the offence committed by the doctors is serious and a proper investigation is required for which their custodial interrogation is necessary.

The police said custodial interrogation will help them identify more people, if any, involved in the racket.

Defence lawyer Brian D'lima was firm on the doctors having no role to play with regards to the verification of the documents provided by the donor and recipient for the transplant to the committee. The papers given to the scrutiny committee were later found to be forged even after videography procedure was done. "The doctors are for the operation, not to check whether the documents are genuine or forged," he said.

He also argued that since kidney recipient Brijkishore Jaiswal was granted bail from the court, Shewlikar and Shetty can also be granted bail.

The court, however, said Jaiswal was under medical treatment due to which he was granted bail, while the two doctors who have applied for anticipatory bail are not under any medication, and since the police suspect their involvement, their plea has been rejected.
