The Vasai Police on Tuesday registered an FIR against unknown persons following the deaths of 150 crows, nine stray dogs and squirrels due to poisoning. Animal activists have a strong suspicion that the dogs might have been killed by the infamous Chaddi Baniyan gang so that their barks don't wake up locals when they try to break into a house.

The gang is active in Palghar district and is known for poisoning pet dogs by poisoning them so that they don't alert the residents when they break into a house. Armed with bamboos, members of this gang also apply oil on themselves to escape if they get caught.

However, the animal killings that took place at Narligaon in Vasai (West), just beside the police station, also could be the handiwork of locals who wanted to get rid of the animals. Dna had reported the deaths on its front page on Tuesday.

"It seems that the dogs might have been killed with the motive of house-breaking as they bark and guard the houses around which they stay. Such incidents are taking place all over Maharashtra. The Chaddi Baniyan gang has the same modus operandi," said Durga Rai, an animal activist.

Confirming that a case had been registered, NS Bhosale Patil, inspector, Vasai police station, said, "We have registered a case under section 428 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating further."
