Dharma Patil had warned the government in December that he would commit suicide if his letter was ignored. Patil, who succumbed on January 28, after battling for life for six days, had submitted the notice to the Revenue Commissioner's office in Nashik on December 5. He had clearly stated he will wait for a month for the government to respond to his letter and if that did not happen, he will end his life.

There was no response even after one and half months. As a result, Patil consumed poison on January 22. The 84-year-old farmer had said in his letter that he was not given proper compensation for his land as he had not involved an agent. He had pointed out that there was a mango orchard on his plot and therefore he was eligible for much higher compensation. He also pointed out how the landowner who held the adjacent plot got much more only because he had got an agent to oil the wheels. Most importantly, Patil had clearly mentioned that the government was to be blamed in case he indeed had to end his life.

"It shows that Patil had patiently waited more than a month for justice, but the BJP government has failed him. This is not suicide, but murder of a farmer by the BJP government. Ministers Jaykumar Rawal and Chandrashekhar Bawankule should be booked under IPC section 302 (attempt to murder)," said NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik.

Anil Gote, a BJP MLA from Dhule, has also slammed his own government over this. He said that the lackadaisical attitude of the government had killed the farmer. "If as a government we blindly rely on bureaucracy, then we will definitely lose the government like Congress-NCP," Gote said. He also alleged that land acquisition had become a big scam in Dhule, where few influential agents/ people had made money even as common farmers were left in the lurch.
