Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to give an extension to director general of police (DGP) Pravin Dixit. The officer is about to retire on July 31.

According to sources in the home department, Fadnavis is in favour of giving extension to Dixit. "However, the tenure of extension has not been fixed yet. We can give minimum three months and maximum six months extension," said a source on the condition of anonymity.

Sources in the police department said that it was a big blow to director general, home guard, Rakesh Maria. "Maria was recently shunted out as Mumbai police commissioner over the Sheena Bora murder case. Maria is known as an upright officer and is very close to NCP chief Sharad Pawar. Therefore, the BJP-run government does not want to put him in any important post. Maria is retiring in January next year. If extension is given to Dixit, then Maria will not have any chance of getting a plum post," the source added.

A home department source said as per the hierarchy, after retirement of Dixit, Satish Mathur, director general, Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), is the top contender for the DGP post. "The Ganesh festival is round the corner, so it will not be right to change the DGP now. Hence, the extension. Besides, Fadnavis has good rapport with Dixit. Once this decision is taken, the file will be sent to the Centre for approval," he added.

Maria, who is known to be an ace investigator, has severed in Mumbai in various positions. He investigated the 1993 serial blast case, Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar blast cases, 26/11 case, 13/7 serial blast case and was instrumental in busting the Indian Mujahideen module in a nationwide crackdown while he was heading Mumbai crime branch.
