One of the promises which chief minister Devendra Fadnavis made when he came to power was to fasten government work. However, it appears that he is yet to work on this promise.

A very crucial decision over which the state government is sleeping for three months now is conducting Maharashtra's own CET for admission in engineering courses from 2016.

Four lakh engineering aspirants from across Maharashtra currently studying in classes XI and XII have been having sleepless nights since February when education minister Vinod Tawde gave a statement about consideration of such proposal; now, the government seems to be far away from taking a final call on the same.

The aspirants are seeking clarity on the government whether it has decided to pull off from the national test JEE, and if it will conduct the state level CET from 2016. Students are also seeking declaration of syllabus, test format and admission formula, because they have less than a year to prepare.

While Tawde remained unavailable for comment, a technical education official said: "Wait for some time. We are working out a plan which will be made public soon."

The directorate of technical education (DTE), which conducts engineering admission, is also clueless. "We had submitted a detailed proposal to the government in February. We are also waiting for their decision," said a senior DTE official.

A class XII student said: "We have got less than a year to appear for the JEE or CET exams. This is extremely callous on the part of the state government, which is not only sitting on admission details, but also making frequent changes in their education policy."

Meanwhile, coaching classes have already started for class XI students. A parent said: "We want to enrol our daughter for integrated junior college, the fees for which is Rs5 lakh for two years – for preparation of JEE and classes XI-XII course. If JEE is discontinued, our investment will go to waste."

Class XII marks won't be criteria for JEE?
While the government is yet to take a final call on the matter, a highly placed official said the DTE has not only proposed to withdraw the participation from JEE and conduct the state CET instead. This will automatically revoke the class XII marks being admission criteria as mandated in the JEE format. Maharashtra has been using the 50:50 formula in which percentile of JEE score and class 12 marks are used to prepare the merit list.
